The Observation Period table is designed to capture the time intervals in which data are being recorded for the Person. An Observation Period is the span of time when a Person is expected to have the potential of Drug and Condition information recorded. For claims data, observation periods are equivalent to enrollment periods to a plan.
Analytical methods use Observation Period records to distinguish periods with no observed records from periods where data are systematically not captured, such as a person not having insurance coverage.
